Why do sailors yell starboard?
Sailors began calling the right side the steering side, which soon became starboard by combining two Old English words: stéor (meaning steer) and bord (meaning the side of a boat). When looking towards the front of the ship, the ‘port’ is on the left, and the ‘starboard’ is on the right. This can be tricky to remember, but the best way I learned to remember port and starboard is that ‘port’ and ‘left’ both have four letters, and ‘starboard’ and ‘right’ have more than four letters.
