Why am I struggling to breathe when swimming?
A common mistake among new swimmers is swimming flat without adequate rotation, leading to breathlessness. Swimming flat also make it harder to turn your head to inhale air when it is time to breathe. Aim to improve your rotation, synchronize your head rotation with your body for easier, more effective breathing. Breathe like this: :V push your lips to the side and only separate the area of your lips where your molars are. As you swim, your head will create a little air pocket which will allow you to briefly catch a breath. When you breathe, you should only be turning your head so that ONE goggle lens sticks out of the water.Exhale as you swim, letting air out slowly as if you’re humming. This drill improves lung capacity over time because you’re swimming as far as you can prior to taking a breath. It’s best to start using new-school hypoxic sets in 50s or 100s, building up the distance as you become more comfortable with the drill.
