What’s underneath an ice rink?
An ice rink has the following layers and elements: Heated concrete. Sand and gravel base. Ground water drain. Fill it all up at once so the water can level out – freezing in layers can create an uneven surface. The following floods should be with hot water if available. Once you have two to three inches of ice your rink will be ready!
What is the size of a standard ice rink?
The rink is divided into zones by a red line at center ice and two blue lines. A standard North American rink measures 200 feet by 85 feet. European ice surfaces are slightly larger. Olympic hockey rinks, also known as IIHF rinks (International Ice Hockey Federation), are 200 feet long but 100 feet wide. That extra width gives players 15 more feet to work with, creating more room for play development and strategy.
