Ash is indigenous to Maine and is very strong, in fact, the strongest of the hardwoods we offer. Ash provides long straight grains and is very tough. Maple is strong, flexible and results in a clean vibrant paddle. One of the more ideal woods for paddles, it’s light weight like cherry, slightly more durable than cherry but not as aesthetically pleasing as cherry. With the lighter colour wood the wood grain tends to be less prominent.Some materials may be more easily available and cost less, while more specialty or custom materials are made in lower quantities and cost more – like a pine 2”x4” versus a slab of veneer-quality walnut burl. How the paddle board is physically put together has a huge impact on its price and longevity.Softwoods such as cedar, pine and spruce will be lightweight, hardwoods such as ash, maple, walnut, oak etc.As a general rule of thumb, a more premium paddleboard will be lighter and no corners will be cut to get it to that weight. It will be lighter because of the technology used to get it to that weight as we have discussed above. It will have denser drop stitching, less layers of pvc, be heat bonded rather than glued.A good inflatable paddle board from a reputable brand will generally cost between $900 for a solidly performing all-around board with a durable construction to $1200 and up for higher-end boards with additional material layering and unique design features for specialty uses.
