Should a wetsuit be tight or loose?
A wetsuit should fit as tightly as you can comfortably get into. What you need to avoid are slack areas where water can pool, or loose seals around the ankles, wrists, and neck. If your wetsuit is too loose, cold water will enter the suit freely or “flush through”. If your suit is loose, an abundance of water will flush through, making the suit less effective at keeping you warm. A wetsuit should also fit snugly around your neck (many people wear a rashguard underneath their wetsuit to prevent a neck rash).Rinse your wetsuit in clean fresh water after each use (warm or cold is fine! Turn it inside out and allow it to completely dry away from direct sunlight before turning it back right side out. Should you buy a wetsuit a size smaller?

Is it okay if a wetsuit is a little big?

They don’t shrink because you put them in the washing machine or dryer (because you now know you shouldn’t) but because they deteriorate over time. The neoprene material is made up out of little cells that are filled with air. When the suit ages, the cells can collapse.If your wetsuit is too tight, you will feel uncomfortable and restricted as you swim. Usually, you can spot that your wetsuit is too small as it will be very hard to get into (harder than usual!
Do wetsuits shrink when wet?
Only when thrown into hot water, the wetsuit might shrink. Common ocean or pool water on the other hand does not impact the size of the wetsuit significantly. It’s only exposure to hot water, such as that from a hot tub or overly hot wash, that can cause shrinkage. Wetsuits are designed to be snug, but they should never cause pain or significantly restrict movement. Do Xcel wetsuits run big or small?
Although we find the Xcel size charts to be quite accurate, they are to be used as a general guide and if your measurements fall between sizes, we suggest choosing the next largest size. Wetsuits are so stretchy that you may feel that it fits even if it is actually too small. Wearing multiple separate wetsuit layers is a great cost-effective way to make one suit comfortable in a wider range of water temperatures. After all, a wetsuit only works when the fit is right. On the other hand, you don’t want it to be too restrictive or tight, and want to avoid excess material in areas like your armpits, lower back and behind your knees.If your wetsuit already has a hood attached to it, you can add extra insulation to your core by wearing a 3mm shorty under or over your full wetsuit. In addition to a hooded vest, I find that some of the assorted thermal products made for layering under your wetsuit can make a big difference in your warmth.Choosing the Right Wetsuit for You If you’re competing in colder water conditions or looking for maximum coverage and buoyancy, a sleeved wetsuit may be the best option for you. On the other hand, if you prioritize freedom of movement and breathability, a sleeveless wetsuit may be the better choice.
Is a 4:3 wetsuit too warm for summer?
A 4/3 suit is also a good choice for temperatures ranging from 8°to 11°Celsius (48° -54°Fahrenheit), but in those conditions, you can also go for the added warmth of a 5/4 mm suit. In cold winter water, a hooded 5/4 mm suit is a must, along withsurf glovesandsurf bootsto keep your hands and feet warm. F to 54°F/8°C to 11°C: 4/3mm full wetsuit with booties and five-finger gloves. F to 47°F/4°C to 7°C: 5/4mm full wetsuit with booties, five-finger gloves, and hood. Below 39°F/Below 3°C: 6/5/4mm full wetsuit with booties, mittens, and hood.A 3mm or 2mm shorty for summer, a 3mm fullsuit with watertight seams for dawn patrols and general later spring and early Autumn surfing. A 4mm suit for early spring and late Autumn before the winter really kicks in. A 5mm wetsuit for winter in most locations is fine, especially when couple with boots gloves and a hood.A 7mm is generally recommended for water temps between 50 and 70 F, but individual cold tolerance varies so dramatically that some will be fine at 50 and below even in a 5mm, while others will want a drysuit at 70. For me, in the local temperatures, a 5mm is not enough but a 7mm generally is.Zone3 Advance wetsuit can be used in water temperatures ranging from a minimum of 12 C°. International Triathlon Union (ITU) recommends that the maximum water temperature which the wetsuit can be used for racing is 22 C° so use of the wetsuit above this temperature is at the user’s risk.
