How to get Yachtmaster offshore?
Coastal and Offshore Yachtmasters are assessed by a one day practical examination at sea in a sailing or motor yacht. The Ocean exam is a 3 hour oral test. Prior to the exam candidates must gain experience in yachts and hold some pre-entry certificates. A theoretical experience in line with the RYA Day Skipper Theory course is required. A practical experience in line with the RYA Day Skipper course is desirable but not required. If you have advanced practical skills but lack theoretical knowledge, then the RYA Fast Track to Yachtmaster Course is for you.Requirements for starting RYA Day Skipper include having logged at least 5 days and 100 sailing miles of which no fewer than 4 hours should have been completed at night.Most RYA Sailing certificates are valid for life once you have met the required standard and been granted the certificate. This goes for the spectrum of certificates from RYA Competent Crew to RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Ocean.A skipper is responsible for the management of a yacht, so the course also includes basic engine checks, passage planning, preparing the yacht for sea, rules of the road and meteorology.
