What course comes after Day Skipper?

As described on the RYA website, a Yachtmaster does not need any formal training, rather with sufficient logged experience and seatime, you can take the Yachtmaster exam.But don’t despair; you can still get yacht jobs with no experience – if you know how to go about it! The best place to start for most people is with an entry-level position. Our Start Yachting and Competent Crew courses are suitable for children aged 8 and 12 respectively. What is the Day Skipper motor boat course?
The Day Skipper course aims to teach pilotage, navigation, seamanship and boat handling up to the standard required to skipper a motor cruiser safely by day in tidal waters with which the student is familiar. Students should have a knowledge of Day Skipper Theory. One evening during your five days you’d normally go sailing at night in the dark to get some night hours under your belt. The course is taught on a cruising yacht (7 to 13m LOA). The aim is to teach pilotage, navigation, seamanship, and boat handling up to the standard required to skipper a small cruising yacht safely.Course description For someone with no previous experience on the water, Level 1 Start Sailing offers an ideal introduction. The course is entirely practical and can be taken in approximately 2 days, 16 hours or equivalent number of sessions.If you’re in the middle of the ocean then there are fewer hazards and it’s possible to take lots of quick naps to ensure you get some rest while sailing. Waking up every hour to scan the horizon before heading back to sleep is the best way to sleep as a single-handed sailor.
Can I go straight to Day Skipper?
Yes you can! The RYA Minimum requirements for taking the Day Skipper practical course are to have logged 5 days onboard a cruising yacht, 100NM & 4 night hours. The RYA Day Skipper certificate does not have an expiration date; once obtained, it remains valid indefinitely. This means that the skills and qualifications it represents are recognized for the lifetime of the holder.The RYA Day Skipper Motor Qualification It will also enable you to apply for an ICC (International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft) allowing you to go cruising abroad.Required certificates Five years, if under 70 years of age or two years from the age of 70. Prior to the validity expiring candidates will need to attend and pass a RYA Yachtmaster Instructor revalidation on the water. Revalidation is carried out over one day for motor and two for sail.The Yachtmaster Ocean is the highest qualification awarded by the RYA. Recognised worldwide, the Yachtmaster Ocean certificate proves you have the knowledge, experience, and confidence to skipper a yacht across an ocean.
