Do they have surfing in the Olympics?
Competitions in the sport of surfing, governed by the International Surfing Association (ISA), have been held at two editions of the Summer Olympic Games. First selected as one of the discretionary sports at the 2020 and 2024 games, surfing will be inducted as one of the mandatory sports at the 2028 games. And the International Olympic Committee pre-selects new sports, but surfing is not one of them. In 2015, the Tokyo 2020 committee offered new sports, including surfing and finally, it is considered an Olympic sport.
Why is Olympic surfing not in Paris?
Where will surfing be at the 2024 Olympics? Olympic surfing will be held in Tahiti, specifically Teahupo’o, because the Paris committee wanted to spread the 2024 Games beyond France, such as its own overseas territories. Tahiti is part of French Polynesia, which is a semi-autonomous territory of France. The Olympic surfing events will be held in French Polynesia – 15,700km from Paris. That’s the farthest an Olympic event has been from its host city, but a few others have ‘gone the distance’. Moscow 1980’s sailing events were in Tallinn, now in Estonia – nearly 1,000km west of Moscow.
