Are you supposed to wax the bottom of a surfboard?
Wax should only be applied to the top of a surfboard and used wherever your hands and feet come in contact with the board. The bottom of the surfboard should remain clean to allow water to flow smoothly around it. Beginner surfers usually start on foam surfboards which don’t need wax. The foam is gritty enough that extra traction isn’t necessary. However, once you graduate to a fiberglass or epoxy board, you have to use wax.The wax gives you all the grip you need to ride your board – without this, forget surfing! It’s also key to make sure you get the right wax to go on your board depending on the temperature of the water you plan to surf in, this will give you the best possible grip and therefore the best performance.Keep in mind, for this use case, any wax will do – whether it’s surfboard wax, snowboard wax, etc. You can do this regardless of what kind of water you will be skimboarding in (cold or warm), but some people prefer to stick to their temperature range, and that’s fine too.Surfers and some SUP boarders use wax to prevent slippage off the board, which is why Skimboarders use wax as well. Wax is used for Skimboarding also as there’s no grip on most Skimboards. Why do surfers wax the top of their boards?
It stops surfers from losing balance as they paddle out to the waves and keeps them connected to their boards while performing complicated maneuvers. Surfboard wax also acts as an additional coating for surfboards, protecting them against the elements. Surfboard wax is applied by first putting a base coat onto the clean board. This harder base coat forms a bump pattern on the surfboard to which the surfer will stick. The base coat is then topped with a coat of wax of an appropriate temperature. It usually has a scent added to it – something you will recognise when you walk into most surf shops – and again these days most brands are trying to use more natural oils and resins to do this.
