Why is Zapata famous?
Emiliano Zapata was an accomplished guerrilla leader during the Mexican Revolution, and he strongly opposed the hacienda system that characterized much of rural Mexican life. Partly because of his efforts, fundamental land reform was enshrined in the Mexican constitution of 1917. The Person Born in rural Mexico, Emiliano Zapata fought for the land rights of working people and led an armed group of poor peasants known as “the Zapatistas” during the Mexican Revolution (1910–1920). Zapata was assassinated a year before the war ended, but the Zapatistas carried on his name and mission.

As Carranza consolidated his power and defeated Villa in 1915, Zapata initiated guerrilla warfare against the Carrancistas, who in turn invaded Morelos, employing once again scorched-earth tactics to oust the Zapatista rebels. But Zapata refused to support Huerta and remained a leader of the revolution, continuing his crusade for the people—who supported him with cheers of “¡Viva Zapata! Zapata! The bitter fighting of the revolution continued and soon those who had supported the slain Madero—including Zapata and Pancho .
