Owned and managed by the Corporation of London, the Forest has been maintained as a public open space since the passing of the Epping Forest Act 1878. All 54 members of Epping Forest District Council in Essex were elected following boundary changes. The council remained under Conservative majority control.Epping’s identity is linked with that of Epping Forest. In fact it is now known as “the Town of the Forest”. In early times the whole of Essex was covered by forest. This part of the county became a Royal Hunting Forest.
