Liu became the youngest ever U. S. Figure Skating champion at just 13 years old, landing three triple axels over her two programs. Her early success and jumping talent meant she quickly was seen as the U. S. Russian skaters dominating podiums at the time. When her score was finally read, the 19-year-old from Clovis, California, had made history. Liu became the first American women’s figure skating world champion in nearly two decades, dethroning three-time defending champ Kaori Sakamoto with a brilliant free skate Friday night.On April 9, 2022, Liu announced on Instagram that she was retiring from figure skating, stating that she felt satisfied with her career, had completed her goals, and was moving on with [her] life. Later going into more detail about her decision, she explained, I was so into skating that I really didn’t do much else.

The LIU Sharks are the athletics teams representing Long Island University’s (LIU) campuses in Brooklyn and Brookville, New York. The Sharks compete in NCAA Division I athletics and are members of the Northeast Conference. The LIU Sharks football program represents Long Island University in college football at the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) level.
