What are spray decks used for?
A spraydeck (sprayskirt in N. America, akuilisaq or tuiitsoq in Greenland) is a flexible waterproof cover for a boat (in particular for a kayak or a canoe) with holes for the passengers’ waists. Spraydecks are used to prevent water from entering the boat while allowing passengers to paddle or row. If you’re paddling on a river, lake, or in the sea in a sit-in-kayak, you’ll want a spraydeck to keep the water out. Your spraydeck will keep water from dripping onto you, keeps waves out of your boat and will generally give you a drier and warmer paddling experience.Construction. A spraydeck is made of water-tight cloth or neoprene or nylon. It is sized to fit over the opening, or cockpit, of the canoe or kayak, with holes for the waists of the passengers. The spraydeck generally seals around the rim of the cockpit and around the torso of each passenger.
How tight should a spray deck be?
Pretty self explanatory really. You want the waist tube to be comfortable but snug. There is a fair bit of stretch in neoprene, but more often than not people will go off their regular waist size. Some models, such as the Nylon / Kidz Decks, have an adjustable one-size-fits-all system. Nylon spraydeck body tubes are often one size fits all with an adjustable elastic cord around the top edge, however neoprene and combination decks are usually supplied in a range of waist sizes. The waist-tube is usually the easiest measurement to get right (most people have a rough idea of their waist size!
Is it better to roll or spray a deck?
Spraying your waterproof deck stain from the get-go allows you to cover even more area than rolling does and also reach those tighter spaces. If you have a covered deck, try using the roller to reach those high spaces. For your wide surfaces, like the main surface of the deck, consider using the sprayer.For the decking, work in sections only as far as you can comfortably reach and follow the planks lengthwise, keeping the spray tip approximately 12 inches from the surface. A tip extension is a useful accessory, as it will allow you to spray the decking at the proper distance with needing to bend over.

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST? We work with a number of outfitters who have been using our decks for over 10 years. With regular use and clean dry storage your spray deck should last you a life time. While applying deck paint or stain to your deck is a key component of deck maintenance, there is more to maintaining your deck than this task alone. Generally speaking, it’s best to apply a new coat of deck stain every 2-3 years, and deck paint can hold up for as long as ten years.You can typically expect a deck to last 10-30 years for untreated wood and 50 or more years for treated wood and composite.
